Democratic Senator Faces Bribery Charges

Senator Menendez Trial Set for March 21, 2024

Democratic Senator Faces Bribery Charges

Allegations of Gold Bars, Mercedes, and Kickbacks

WASHINGTON, D.C. - September 26, 2023 - A top U.S. senator will face trial on charges that he accepted bribes, including gold bars and a Mercedes, in exchange for political favors, the Department of Justice announced today. The trial of Senator Robert Menendez (D-NJ) is scheduled to begin on March 21, 2024. Menendez, who has denied the charges, faces up to 20 years in prison if convicted. The indictment alleges that Menendez accepted bribes from Salomon Melgen, a wealthy Florida eye doctor. In exchange, prosecutors say, Menendez used his position to help Melgen's business interests and to block an investigation into Melgen's Medicare billing practices. The charges against Menendez have sent shockwaves through the Democratic Party. Menendez is a powerful senator who serves on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and has been a leading voice on foreign policy issues. If convicted, Menendez would be the first sitting senator to be convicted on corruption charges since Senator Bob Packwood (R-OR) was convicted in 1995.
